A few days ago I had a conversation with a 19-year young man who wanted to know what is the fastest way to grow spiritually.
Though I can’t really understand why he’d be in such a hurry – the process often involves a great deal of pain – I did my best to answer his question based on my life experience.
In this article, I’d like to share with you the advice I gave him in hopes that it will inspire and support you along your own spiritual journey.
The Fastest Way to Grow Spiritually
These days I find it nearly impossible not to talk about Heart Intelligence without talking about spiritual growth. After all, what I call Heart Intelligence is a system or framework for personal development. And, personal development is, in essence, spiritual growth. Are we not spiritual beings having a personal, human experience?
But, what does it really mean to ‘grow spiritually’?
Basically, in its simplest form, to grow spiritually is to grow in your capacity to be more loving. Period.
To me, it has nothing to do with becoming enlightened. These days I no longer believe in becoming enlightened but in moments of enlightenment. Whenever I hear of someone who is supposed to be ‘enlightened’, my immediate response is “really, wait until they go home for Christmas ”.
The fact is, EVERY major spiritual tradition basically teaches that our purpose in life is to become more loving. This is what Jesus, Buddha and Krishna taught. And all major traditions refer to the human heart as the true center of love, intelligence, wisdom and guidance.
“And whosoever believeth in God, He guideth his heart. And God is knower of all things.” – Quran
“For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” – Proverbs 23:7
“The way is not in the sky. The way is in the heart.” – Buddha
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” – Matthew 5:8
This is what inspired me to become a Heart Intelligence Coach after completing my studies as a New Thought Practitioner. I just knew in my heart, that if I was to serve humanity and help others grow, the fastest way would be by helping others access the inner source of love and wisdom of their hearts.
5 Proven Ways to Accelerate your Spiritual Growth
Here are 5 proven ways to help you accelerate your personal and spiritual growth. Since I began the conscious part of my spiritual journey – for nearly 40 years I was very much sleep – these have become my own habitual practices.
1) Start a Meditation Practice
Primarily, there are two kinds of meditation practices: upward and downward. Upward practices encourage the flow of energy from you towards the Cosmos so that you become ‘one’ with the greater totality of the Universe (or God, Spirit, Source). Downward practices however, invite the Universe’s energy into your body, so that you become more fully YOU.
In my experience, heart centered meditation or any meditation practice that focuses on the heart, such as Heart Rhythm Meditation, are downward practices that will increase your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.
2) Spend Regular Time in Nature
George Washington Carver, an American scientist who invented over 100 products made with peanuts, once said, “I Love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we only tune in.” So, go for a walk, hike, surf, or simply start a garden. Your heart and soul will be glad you did!
3) Have the Courage to tell the Truth
Unless you’re telling yourself and others what is true and real for you, the possibilities of personal and spiritual growth are null. Without truth there’s no freedom. And without freedom there’s no growth. So, you want to become ‘enlightened’? Want to become more loving? Start telling the truth. It will set you and others free.
4) Find a Guru to Help you Find your Guru
Spend time regularly with a coach, teacher, mentor, either in person, by watching their videos, reading their books, or attending their classes. Look specially for someone you connect with, someone who smiles and laughs a lot, who radiates love and uplifts you each time you hang out with them. And, be sure that he or she is always pointing you towards the ultimate center of truth: You. Ultimately, only you know what is best and right for you.
5) Join a Community
Find a group of people or community where you can open your heart, give and receive support, and share your unique gifts. In my experience, there’s no fastest way to grow than by being part of a community of committed individuals who are willing to help you stay in integrity with yourself. This is one of the reasons people experience such accelerated growth in the Open Heart Circles I facilitate. And, if you’re like me and can’t find a community close to where you live, then start one. That’s how The Open Hearts Club was born.
One Last Bit of Advice
Finally, bear in mind that personal and spiritual growth is not a destination, but a journey you embark on. A journey filled with all kinds of experiences, each experience designed to ultimately help you discover yourself, and the awesomeness you already are. So be patient, flavor each experience, and enjoy each step along the way!
