Who would have thought? According to the BBC, the 13th-century poet, jurist, theologian and Sufi mystic Rumi is the highest-selling poet in the United States. Across time, distance, and culture, Rumi’s poems articulate what it feels like to be fully alive, feel deeply, and love endlessly.
A passage I read recently that has inspired me deeply in a new creative project I’m working on is:
Load the ship and set out. No one knows for certain whether the vessel will sink or reach the harbour. Cautious people say, “I’ll do nothing until I can be sure.” Merchants know better. If you do nothing, you lose. Don’t be one of those who won’t risk the ocean.”
In it there’s a timeless message Rumi has for aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders to simply be bold, courageous, and take action in the direction of your heart’s deepest desires. To stop waiting until you’re 100% ready, or until you can be fully certain or sure.
In my experience, you’re never truly ready to do something until you’re actually doing it. So, whatever that idea is that you’ve been waiting to take action on, simply go for it. As my friend Jules Wyman recently shared during our Open Heart Conversation, “just give it a go and see what happens!”
If you have an idea follow its impulse, get on the boat and see what’s waiting for you on the other side of the ocean. If you do nothing you lose.
Jump in the water. What are you waiting for?
