Mine began shortly after turning 40. In a period of two weeks, I was mugged, fired from a job and then lost my mother. Once it began, I knew there was no turning back. That I would never be the same person. Because that’s what ‘waking up’ does to you. It changes you forever.
Woke up to what? you may ask. To a greater reality that we’re all part of. My friend Tej Steiner and I call it ‘Heart Awakening’ because it deeply changes how you feel inside, how you experience life, and how you connect with others.
The following is a list of things that I wish I knew when I first ‘woke up’. Regardless of where you are in your heart awakening process, I hope that what I share here will support you along your journey.
1. Things will get worse before they get better
Things often have to fall apart before they can come together. Therefore, expect situations, jobs, careers, and many of your life structures to change or completely fall away. During this time, losing your job, getting sick or breaking a leg, might just be the best thing that could happen to you. Your Universe is re-organizing itself to make room for something better.
2. Some people you love will walk away
As you wake up to your heart’s true needs and desires, the way you vibe and interact with others is likely to inconvenience, challenge or scare them. People you love, feel deeply connected to and are close friends with will either walk away, distance themselves or disappear from your life altogether. Let them. In time, your social circle will be filled with new friends and connections that match your new way of being. And those few friends that remain, you’re likely to keep forever.
3. Be diligent and do your own research
As a new reality and way of being in the world begin to set in, you’ll be pulled in many different directions. There will be countless gurus, teachers, books, courses, YouTube videos, workshops, retreats, Shamanic journeys and ‘Enlightenment’ paths to follow. Before your signup, do some diligent research. Learn to discern truth vs. falsehood and to feel into what is true, real and right for you. Your mind might be easily be fooled, but your heart will never be!
4. Waking up is not the same as getting up
Staying awake, but safely tucked-in under the warm blankets only feeds your bed bugs, buys you time and delays the inevitable. Until you make the decision to get up and start taking powerful inspired action that is congruent or in alignment with this new awareness and in the direction of your heart’s true desires, nothing in your world will change or get better. The journey of 1,000 miles will begin with that first step you take. Take it!
5. There’s no need to start all over
Up until now, you’ve been learning about yourself, about life, playing and experimenting. All those experiences you had, all those skills you acquired along the way, all those relationships you tried out, every heartbreak, absolutely everything has made you stronger, wiser and better. Therefore, move forward without regrets. Though it might feel like you’re starting over, the truth is you’re just jumping on the next leg of your journey!
6. You don’t have to do it alone
Seek the company, love, and support of people around you who are also waking up from the dream of fear, guilt, shame, and disconnection. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you sit in a circle of friends where you feel seen and heard; where you are loved, honored and valued for the wonderful and caring person that has always been there. Repeat to yourself over and over, “I don’t have to do it all alone, waking up together is better!”
7. Give and contribute to others
Like a boomerang going out into the Universe, everything you send out will eventually come back to either enrich you or haunt you. Therefore, choose projects, ideas or paths that excite you, make you come fully alive, and create a positive impact in the lives of others. Heart Awakening is all about our interconnectedness. Ask yourself, “Will this idea, choice or project make my life, other people’s and the planet better?” If you get a ‘yes’, then go for it!
8. Only love will see you through
Remember that, in the end, the only thing that will get you through your own awakening process is your ability to deeply love and unconditionally accept yourself throughout the journey. If a certain path, teacher, or program is not helping you become more loving, kind, compassionate, caring, forgiving and understanding then quickly discard it. Heart awakening is ultimately about waking up to your inner source of love, wisdom, and power!
I hope you find these eight things useful and that they support you along your heart awakening journey.
